Pokémon Stadium Complete Round 1 FAQ
-
2
-
3
Q: What is this category?
-
4
A: Beat the Gym Leader Castle, all 10 Stadium Cups, and Mewtwo in Round 1 mode as fast as possible using only rental Pokémon.
-
5
-
6
Q: Why only use rentals?
-
7
A: For one, you can’t transfer Pokémon into the NSO re-release. For another, even if you could, the run would become exceptionally boring.
-
8
-
9
Q: Why is the order you battle the gym leaders NOT scrambled like in Gym Leader Castle speedruns?
-
10
A: Unlike GLC speedruns, we must do this run off of an empty save file. Aside from pre-registering teams before starting the run, there must be no progress on any battles.
-
11
-
12
Q: Why are you using x Pokémon instead of other x Pokémon?
-
13
A: Since we use rentals, we are stuck with the sets built into the game, and it’s not uncommon for lower stage Pokémon to have better moves than their evolved forms (i.e., Abra gets Psychic while Kadabra gets Psybeam and Alakazam gets Psywave in GLC, or Weepinbell getting a 1-turn Grass-type move vs Victreebel getting a 2-turn Grass-type move in Poké Cup).

14
-
15
Q: What’s the difference between Round 1 and Round 2?
-
16
A: Different teams with different moves, better stats in Round 2, etc. Basically the game repeats itself with generally harder teams compared to Round 1.
-
17
-
18
Q: Are movesets the same across Gym Leader Castle/Stadium Cups/Mewtwo?
-
19
A: No. Each individual cup has a different moveset for each Pokémon allowed for rentals. However, cups with multiple levels (Poké/Great/Ultra/Master Ball) all share the same sets within that cup (so Prime Cup sets are all the same, Poké Cup sets are all the same (but Prime Cup and Poké Cup sets are different from each other), and GLC, Pika, and Petit Cups have their own sets). Mewtwo uses the rental sets from Prime Cup.

21
This means that some Pokémon are still good no matter where you go (like Zapdos, who gets Thunder or Thunderbolt anywhere, while other Pokémon are only viable in certain cups. Stats are also distributed differently across the cups.

-
23
Q: Why does the gym leader use a Pokémon that isn’t their type specialty?
-
24
A: To make the fights more challenging. The early gym leaders may still have all one type, but later ones have a wider spread for more coverage.
-
25
-
26
Q: Where are the most likely places to die?
-
27
A: Honestly anywhere if you get unlucky. An untimely miss, crit, or status condition activating can just snowball the entire battle and result in a loss. Generally this isn’t too time consuming, since as long as you have a Continue, you shouldn’t have to redo an entire cup from the beginning.
-
28
-
29
Q: How do you get a Continue?
-
30
A: Win a battle with none of your Pokémon fainting. You can use these to retry an opponent you lost again immediately. These are not available in Gym Leader Castle, so a death on a Gym Leader for instance can easily lose 10+ minutes.
-
31
-
32
Q: So why not just do both Round 1 and Round 2 (aka Complete the Game)?
-
33
A: Because to complete both Round 1 and 2 would likely take a minimum of 18 hours if you were exceptionally lucky, and I don’t have that kind of time. Some of the Round 2 Cups are also insanely hard for no reason, with some fights just being impossible to win if the opponent brings the wrong Pokémon to the fight.
-
34
-
35
Q: Why do you reset after completing a cup?
-
36
A: It saves time, skipping a Hall of Fame cutscene of showcasing the Pokémon used to complete that cup. It’s not worth it in Poké Cup and Prime Cup Poké/Great/Ultra Ball tiers however, since you get the trophy immediately with no Hall of Fame.
-
37
-
38
Q: Does the 1/256 Gen 1 miss occur?
-
39
A: No, rather a 1/65536 chance to miss can occur. This is because the game only does one re-roll if the 1/256 miss is rolled first, it’s possible to roll the 1/256 miss twice, still resulting in the miss occurring.
-
40
-
41
Q: Why does that Pokémon look different?
-
42
A: Giving nicknames can change the coloration of a Pokémon. And no, that wasn't a shiny, shinies weren't a thing in Gen 1.
-
43
-
44
Q: What are you playing on? Is it emulator?
-
45
A: I’m using my Nintendo Switch 2 in the dock hooked up to an HDMI capture card. This game was released on the N64 Nintendo Classics app in April 2023.
-
46
-
47
Q: Why specify that you are running on Switch?
-
48
A: This game plays much faster on Switch than on N64 due to less lag. The amount varies from run to run, so it is considered a separate category, similar to how Emulator runs are often split from console runs due to their inaccuracies.
-
49
Technically I'm playing on a Switch 2, but there doesn't seem to be much, if any difference between Switch 1 and Switch 2.
-
50
-
51
Q: What is your goal time?
-
52
A: Don't really have one. I'd rather prefer a deathless run than a run with a specific time.
